Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, on the night of March 5th 1770 a riot broke out on King Street between British soldiers and a crowd of people. Captain Thomas Preston was the captain in command and was in charge of the British soldiers. That night he had with him his saber, used to signal commands. The crowd was peacefully protesting when a few British soldiers fired into the crowd, after being given the order to fire. After the smoke had cleared, 5 colonists we dead.
Captain Thomas Preston should be found guilty under the following circumstances:
One, the crowd surrounding the sentry and soldiers, according to several witnesses, had no sticks or snowballs or any weapons for that matter. The British soldiers had no reason to fire into the crowd and kill the colonists.
Secondly, Captain Preston was seen giving the order to fire by 3 or 4 witnesses. His intent is still unknown as, stated above, the crowd was peaceful and had no intent on hitting anybody.
Lastly, if Preston wanted his men to cease fire he had plenty of time to shout it, yet no shout to stop was heard.
All of these facts conclude that, Captain Thomas Preston is guilty of murdering several colonists.
Captain Preston should be executed by way of firing squad, for that is how those innocent colonists died. Also, all men associated with this massacre should be branded and banished from America.
